Hi, my name is Shinhee Ma, the creator behind SMA Ceramics. I’m a Korean born, Australian potter and I grew up in Sydney all my life. My name actually means “give trust and bring happiness”. I want to make good quality ceramic work which people can trust as well as to bring satisfaction and happiness while using them.

My passion for ceramics began after attending a short workshop run by a local artist. I think clay is such a beautiful and versatile medium to work with. I love the touch and feel of the clay. You can create, manipulate into any desired size, shapes and forms. There are so many different techniques and skills involved in making ceramics and the possibilities are almost endless.

I really love the beauty of simple, functional ceramics; its ability to hold, contain and vacate; its durability and uses in so many ways. Ceramic is such an intimate and tactile object as it forms a special bond and connection with people as well as bringing happiness and pleasure to your home.

My inspirations are drawn from my daily life. My surrounding environment are reflected in my work. The things I see and value: nature, flora and fauna, man-made and natural objects, still life and illustrations.

All my works are handcrafted by me in my little pottery studio at Marrickville, Sydney Australia. I hope everyone enjoys using my art work for many years.
